For anyone who knows me, knows that I am a sucker for the sea and for food. Thank goodness last night fed my need for both, and a need to have an extra long run in the morning based on the caloric intake of goodness that I consumed tonight! Savannah and Hilton Head have so many eccentric places to offer, and we all know I love different! One of my favorite places on the Hilton Head coast is a place called Burkes Beach. It’s a little hidden gem that only the locals know about. The sunset was absolutely incredible tonight and the temperature was perfect- in the high 70’s by the time the sun was setting. Hello sweet September! Now that’s what I consider perfection! One of the things I love about the beaches of Hilton Head is that they allow dogs, and they were everywhere tonight. Unfortunately my fur children did not get the joy of this experience, but as soon as I saw them all galavanting through the sand it made me wish they were right there with me. As the fiery blue and orange sun was setting behind the Carolina trees, I noticed dragon flies the size of a small bat that were everywhere! I’ve never seen anything like it. Some consider dragon flies a “spirit animal” which I don’t believe in, but I do believe it was a special little surprise from the good Lord above. Butterflies have always been my special little surprise, but tonight it was the beauty of dragonflies.
After watching the sun disappear on the shores of Carolina, the evening was followed by a perfect and quintessential dinner at a local downtown Bluffton restaurant called May River Grill. I have always wanted to try this little hidden gem, but everytime I am there, it’s on Sundays and they are closed. Thank goodness for random experiences on a September Friday night. This place was excellent. It had me smitten from the second I walked in! It’s the small things that make me happy. Ask me to go to a chain restaurant and I may look at you like you are crazy, but take me to a golden gem of a local restaurant and you will find me grinning ear to ear. The grill’s facade is very unassuming, but you will be amazed at what the inside holds. You must never judge a book by it’s cover! It has an extensive menu with superb service along with a vast wine menu. The May River Grill is a proponent of using local seafood and selections to keep their dishes fresh and inventive. They had a list of specials that change daily. When the chef never stops experimenting with new flavors and foods, that’s when you know when you are in a great restaurant! I love how you watch the kitchen while your food is being prepared. The service, drinks, presentation, food, and energy were incredible. Delicious is the bottom line, absolutely loved it and would highly recommend to anyone! Coming from a girl who has a weak spot for any sweet that is put in front of me, dessert is a necessity at May River Grill. Serious as a heart attack (which you might have when you put a piece of this goodness in your mouth) You won’t regret it, promise! I have traveled to restaurants all over the world, and I must say for this type of food and atmosphere, this has it’s very own special spot on the top of my list. The best part for me being that it’s right around the corner! Beyond thankful for fiery sunsets, sand between my toes, decadent food, and company that never gets old!
